Phuket or Koh Samui? An Honest Comparison by Month, Traveller and Budget

For most travellers, Phuket is the better choice: direct international flights, a bigger and more varied island, calmer seas and better weather from November to April, and far more choice of private pool villas at every budget. Koh Samui wins in one specific case: a beach holiday between June and September, when the Gulf of Thailand is drier than the Andaman coast. The rest of the year, and for anyone who wants day trips, restaurants and easy logistics, Phuket is the safer bet.

Weather: the one thing that decides it

The two islands sit on opposite coasts and have opposite monsoons. Phuket, on the Andaman Sea, gets the south-west monsoon from May to October, with the wettest weeks in September and October. Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, gets the north-east monsoon from October to December, and November is its wettest month by a distance.

Which gives a simple rule:

• November to April: Phuket. The sea is flat, the sky is clear, and the Similan Islands, Thailand's best snorkelling, are open. Samui in November is a gamble.
• June to September: Samui has the statistical edge on dry days. Phuket has sunny mornings and afternoon showers, a livelier island, and green-season villa rates 30 to 40 percent below high season. If you want guaranteed beach days, choose Samui; if you want a private pool, day trips and value, Phuket still works. Our rainy season guide explains what those months are really like.
• May and October: both islands are in transition. Phuket is the better bet in the second half of October, Samui in May.

Getting there

Phuket has an international airport with direct flights from London, Frankfurt, Zurich, Doha, Dubai, Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong, Delhi and most of China. From the plane to a villa in Bang Tao is 35 minutes. Samui's airport is owned by Bangkok Airways, which means small aircraft, mostly via Bangkok, and fares that are often double the Phuket equivalent for the same date. The cheaper route, flying to Surat Thani and taking a bus and ferry, adds three to four hours. For a family with young children or a group flying in from different countries, this alone usually settles it.

Beaches and sea

Samui's beaches are pretty and its high-season water is as calm as Phuket's. Phuket has more of them and more variety: the six-kilometre sweep of Bang Tao, the sheltered bay at Nai Thon, the national-park beaches of Nai Yang and Mai Khao near the airport, Kata for surf lessons in the green season, Nai Harn in the south. Villas

This is where Phuket pulls clearly ahead. The north-west coast, Cherng Talay, Layan, Thep Krasatti and the Laguna estate, has flat land and a huge stock of modern pool villas, which keeps prices sane: a new three-bedroom villa with its own pool in Cherng Talay costs less per night than a sea-view equivalent on a Samui hillside, and it is ten minutes from a supermarket, an international hospital and the beach. Samui's best villas are spectacular but cling to steep roads and command a premium for the view.

Things to do

Phuket is a base for the whole Andaman coast: Phi Phi and Maya Bay, Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts, the Similan Islands, Khao Sok's rainforest lake, Krabi, plus Phuket Old Town, the Big Buddha, Blue Tree water park and a dozen elephant sanctuaries. Samui has Ang Thong Marine Park, which is beautiful, and the neighbouring islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. For a week, Phuket's list goes deeper; for a fortnight of doing very little, Samui's smaller scale is part of the charm.

Families

Phuket. Calmer logistics, international hospitals (Bangkok Hospital Phuket in town, and clinics in Cherng Talay), supermarkets with everything a toddler needs, and villas with fenced pools and space to spread out. Samui is perfectly family-friendly in season, but if something goes wrong at 2 a.m. you will wish you were in Phuket. Our verdict

Choose Phuket if you are travelling between November and April, flying in from abroad, bringing children, planning day trips, or want the most villa for your money. Choose Koh Samui if your dates are fixed to June, July or August and beach weather matters more than anything else, or if you have already done Phuket and want somewhere smaller and slower.
