Christmas and New Year in a Phuket Villa: What to Book by When
Peak weather, peak demand: how the festive fortnight works in Phuket, when to book a villa, and where the fireworks and Christmas dinners are.
Christmas and New Year are the two best weeks of weather in Phuket and the two most expensive: flat seas, 32-degree days, no rain to speak of, and villas that are booked out months ahead with seven- to ten-night minimum stays. If you want a private pool villa on the north-west coast between 20 December and 5 January, book by June or July; the best three- and four-bedroom homes go first. Here is how the fortnight works, what it costs, and where to be on the two big nights.
The weather is the easy part
Late December is the heart of the dry season. Expect daytime highs around 32 °C, a sea temperature of 28 to 29 degrees, flat water along Bang Tao and Layan, and perhaps one short shower in the whole fortnight. Boat trips run daily, the Similan Islands are open, and sunsets are reliably clear. The only weather problem is the sun: the UV is strong and the shade by the pool is where afternoons go. What changes at Christmas
Three things distinguish the festive fortnight from an ordinary high-season week:

Christmas Day
Phuket does Christmas in its own way: a Buddhist island with a large European and Australian community, so the day is a beach day with a good lunch. The Laguna resorts on Bang Tao and the beachfront restaurants along the bay run Christmas Eve and Christmas Day set menus and buffets; the Italian beachfront restaurant Azzurra at Laguna, for example, publishes its Christmas feast menu each year, and the Angsana and Banyan Tree hotels host festive brunches. Book these by late November. The alternative many villa guests choose is a long lunch out and a relaxed evening at home: Villa Market at Boat Avenue stocks everything for a Christmas table, and most restaurants around Bang Tao deliver through the Grab app, so the pool and a cold bottle do the rest.
New Year's Eve
The fireworks are on the beaches. Bang Tao has its own displays from the Laguna resorts and the beach clubs, so from a villa in Cherng Talay or Layan you are ten minutes from the sand and back in your own pool before one o'clock. Catch Beach Club and the Laguna hotels sell countdown dinner-and-party packages, typically from around 9,500 THB per person with a glass of sparkling wine, and they sell out. Patong is the island's biggest party with fireworks over the whole bay and a crowd to match; go if that is what you want, and arrange a driver, because taxis on the night are scarce and expensive.
For families, the best New Year's Eve is often the simplest: an early dinner at Boat Avenue, the fireworks from the beach at midnight, and children asleep by half past.
Booking timeline
- By June: choose the villa and confirm dates. Four-bedroom homes and anything within a short walk of Bang Tao beach go first.
- By September: book flights; December fares only rise.
- By late November: Christmas Eve and Christmas Day restaurant tables, New Year's Eve packages, boat trips for the days between the holidays.
- Two weeks before: send flight numbers for the airport transfer and any boat or driver days you want held.
