Honeymoon in Phuket: Why a Private Pool Villa Beats a Resort, and a Five-Day Plan

Phuket is a good honeymoon choice, and a private pool villa on the north-west coast is the best way to do it: your own pool, your own terrace, breakfast whenever you wake up, and the island's best day trips within an hour. Come between November and April for flat seas and dry days, book the villa three to four months ahead, and plan around one boat day, one sunset and one dinner rather than a packed itinerary. Villa or resort suite?

Resorts are good at honeymoons: the towel swans, the spa, the pool bar. What they cannot give you is being alone. A resort's private pool villa is a room with a plunge pool and neighbours over the wall, and it costs as much as a whole house. A standalone villa in Cherng Talay or Layan gives you:

• A full-size pool nobody else swims in, and a terrace where the only music is yours.
• A kitchen and dining table, so breakfast happens on your terms and dinner can be a delivery by the pool as easily as a restaurant.
• Space for the two of you to be in different rooms, which by day four of any honeymoon is worth more than a swim-up bar.
• A concierge on WhatsApp who arranges the airport transfer, the boat, the driver and the restaurant table, which is what the resort concierge does, without the lobby.
• Usually a lower nightly rate than a comparable resort suite, and no service charges added to every drink.

Best months for a Phuket honeymoon

November to April. The sea is flat, the sky is clear and the sunsets are reliable; December to February is the peak and priced accordingly, so late November and March offer the same weather for less. May to July is the value option: sunny mornings, a shower in the afternoon, and rates a third lower, which buys a bigger villa or a longer stay. A five-day plan

Built from Bang Tao, with one thing a day and the afternoons left alone.

Day 1, arrival. Private transfer from the airport, 35 minutes. Swim. Villa Market at Boat Avenue, ten minutes away, for a bottle of something cold, then dinner at one of the restaurants around it.

Day 2, the beach. A morning at Layan, the quiet north end of Bang Tao bay, then lunch and an afternoon on the loungers at a beach club. Sunset walk on the sand, which at Bang Tao goes on for six kilometres.

Day 3, the boat. Phang Nga Bay by private longtail: limestone islands, sea caves you paddle into, a floating village for lunch, and nobody else on your boat. If you prefer beaches to scenery, Phi Phi by speedboat instead; from mid-October to mid-May, the Similan Islands for the clearest water in Thailand.

Day 4, the south and the sunset. A driver for the day: the Big Buddha in the morning, Nai Harn beach for lunch, then Promthep Cape at the southern tip for the sunset the whole island comes to see. Seafood dinner in Rawai on the way back.

Day 5, slow. A couples massage at one of the spas around Boat Avenue or Laguna in the morning, a Thai cooking class or an afternoon in Phuket Old Town's shophouses and cafés, and the one dinner you dress for: the beachfront restaurants at Laguna or a table at Catch.

Add a sixth and seventh day and do less on each; nobody has ever regretted a rest day on a honeymoon.

What to arrange before you arrive

• The villa, three to four months ahead for high season, longer for Christmas and New Year.
• The transfer, with your flight number, so someone is waiting with your name at arrivals.
• The boat, especially in high season when the good private longtails go early.
• One special dinner: the beachfront restaurants at Laguna and Catch Beach Club take bookings weeks ahead in high season; tell them it is a honeymoon.
