Songkran in Phuket 2027: Dates, Where It Is Wild, Where It Is Calm
Thai New Year falls on 13 to 15 April 2027. Here is what the water festival looks like across Phuket and how to pick your level of wet.

Songkran 2027 falls on Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April, the Thai New Year and a public holiday across the country. In Phuket the water festival is concentrated into one big day, 13 April, with the wildest street party on Bangla Road in Patong, the most traditional celebrations in Phuket Old Town and at the temples, and a much gentler version on the north-west coast around Bang Tao and Cherng Talay, where local families throw water for a few hours and then go home for lunch. If you are here in mid-April you cannot avoid getting wet; you can choose how wet.
What Songkran is
Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year, timed to the sun's passage into Aries. The original ritual is pouring scented water over Buddha images and over the hands of elders to wash away the old year. Somewhere in the last few decades the pouring became a nationwide water fight: buckets, hoses, water pistols, pick-up trucks with barrels in the back, and a paste of white clay powder smeared on anyone who passes. Both versions happen at once. The morning of 13 April belongs to the temples; from late morning the streets belong to the water.
Where in Phuket, and how intense
| Place | Intensity | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Bangla Road, Patong | Maximum | Wall-to-wall water fight from midday into the night on 13 April, often spilling into the 14th. Foam parties, sound systems, tens of thousands of people. |
| Phuket Old Town | Medium, traditional | Merit-making at the temples, water pouring ceremonies, parades and cultural performances organised by the municipality, then friendly water play on the streets. |
| Cherng Talay, Bang Tao, Boat Avenue | Gentle | Families and staff outside shops and villages with hoses and buckets on the 13th, mostly done by mid-afternoon. Some restaurants hold a splash party. |
| Kata, Karon, Kamala | Medium | Beach-road water fights through the afternoon of the 13th, calmer than Patong. |
| Inside your villa | Zero | Gates closed, pool open. The only genuinely dry option on the island. |
Phuket's water fighting is shorter than Chiang Mai's, where it runs for days. On the north-west coast the streets are quiet again by the evening of the 13th, and by the 15th the festival is mostly a public holiday with family meals.
Getting around
Songkran is the worst week of the year on Thai roads. The "seven dangerous days" around the holiday see a national spike in accidents, mostly motorbikes and mostly alcohol. Do not rent a scooter that week; use a car with a driver or Grab, keep phones and passports in a dry bag, and expect to be soaked through any open window on the 13th. Water throwing at moving motorbikes is common and dangerous, which is the other reason to leave the bike at home.
Shops, supermarkets and most restaurants stay open. Government offices and banks close on the holiday days, and Phuket International Airport is busy on the days either side as Thais travel home.
The weather
April is Phuket's hottest month, with daytime highs of 34 °C and the warmest sea of the year at around 30 degrees, which is exactly why a water festival was invented for it. Rain is possible in the afternoons as the green season approaches, but mid-April is usually dry and very hot. Our month-by-month weather guide has the detail.
Doing Songkran from a villa
This is the best way to have it both ways. Spend the morning of the 13th at Wat Cherng Talay, the village temple ten minutes from most of our villas, where the water pouring is done properly and visitors are welcome if dressed respectfully. Late morning, walk to Boat Avenue or the village for an hour of friendly water play with the locals, then retreat: gate closed, pool, lunch, a dry afternoon. In the evening, if you want the party, a driver to Patong is 40 minutes; if you don't, the north-west coast is already quiet.
For families this is close to perfect: children love an hour with a water pistol and hate five, and the villa pool is where the rest of the day goes. Water pistols and dry bags are sold at every 7-Eleven in the week before; a driver for the 13th is the one thing to ask the concierge for when you book.
Booking around the dates
Mid-April is the end of high season. Rates are already below the January and February peak, but Songkran itself brings Thai domestic travellers to Phuket, so hotels and villas near Patong fill up for the 12th to 15th. Villas in Cherng Talay and Layan are less affected. Book a month or two ahead, and if you would rather miss the festival entirely, arrive on the 16th, when the island exhales and the rates keep falling into the green season.
Frequently asked questions
When is Songkran in 2027?
Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April 2027. All three days are public holidays in Thailand. In Phuket the water fighting is concentrated on 13 April.
Where is the biggest Songkran party in Phuket?
Bangla Road in Patong, which turns into a water fight from midday on 13 April until late at night. Phuket Old Town hosts the traditional ceremonies and a gentler street celebration.
Can you avoid Songkran in Phuket?
Mostly. The north-west coast around Bang Tao and Cherng Talay sees a few hours of friendly water play on the 13th and is quiet by evening. Inside a private villa you will stay dry.
Is Songkran safe for children?
The water play itself is family-friendly, especially in villages and at temples. The risks are the roads and the strong April sun, so use a car with a driver, avoid motorbikes, and keep the play to an hour or two.
Is Phuket busy during Songkran?
Yes. It is a national holiday, so Thai families travel and Patong fills up. Villas in Cherng Talay and Layan are less affected but still worth booking a month or two ahead.
